Measuring a Room

Measuring a room is much easier than you think, just follow our measuring advice!
You will need a tape measure, pen or pencil, and paper to hand.
- When you start measuring a room, measure the longest and widest part of the room, from the furthest skirting board.
- Remember to measure into any recesses in the room, such as bay windows and door frames as your carpet will always need to end under the door.
- It is always a good idea to add an extra 5cm to both the length and width of any carpet measurement.
- Our range of carpets can come in 4 and 5 metre standard widths. Some ranges are available in other widths such as 1, 2, 2.50 and 3 metre widths. To avoid having joins in your carpet, please make sure the carpet you are going to buy exceeds the width of your room.
- If you have a very wide room, you will need more than one width of carpet. This where we can help, if you send us a simple plan of your room with measurements on as in the example diagram.
Carpets ideally, need to always run in the same direction. As a general rule, towards the front of the house, or towards the light, and always down the stairs.
If the pile or pattern changes direction, the carpet will reflect the light differently.
Measuring Hall, Stairs and Landing
- Firstly, measure your hall as if it was a square room.
- Remember to measure into all recesses and doorways.
- For the landing, make sure that you measure from any recess or doorway, across the landing and over the nosing and down the vertical riser of the top step.
- Note where the stairs are in the hall, and where they meet the landing on the above diagrams.
- The separate parts still have to fit into available widths of carpet.
Measuring stairs
- Count how many stairs there are.
- Next, measure the width and length of a single step.
- For ease, and if the steps are all the same, you can then multiply this by the number of steps.
- This will then provide the width and length required.
- Measure odd shaped steps individually, and number them if there is more than one.
- Remembering to add 5cm to the length and width of the carpet measurements.
The most economical way to fit a stair carpet is to use the width of the carpet cut in strips across the width and fitted to the stairs with joins where the riser meets the step. Fitting in this way minimises wastage and ensures the pile runs in the same direction as the hall or landing, thereby avoiding shade variation.
