Maintenance

Real Wood

The soft sheen of beautiful wood floors. A good rule of thumb is to vacuum and/or dust mop weekly. A damp mop can be used for spills, and when necessary general cleanup on floors which have non-waxed polyurethane or a similar surface finish. When traffic areas of surface finishes begin to show significant wear, screening, scuff sanding the finish surface and re-coating an entire floor is the least involved choice for maintenance. If a floor is waxed, occasional buffing helps renew the shine and remove scuff marks that may appear in the wax coating. If the shine cannot be renewed in heavily used lanes, occasionally re-waxing these areas may be necessary. Intervals for completely re-waxing a floor may extend to a year or longer when attention has been paid to proper care.

Wood and water don't mix. No matter what finish your wood floor has, we recommend never pouring water on the floor. While a damp mop may be used on polyurethane and other surface finishes in good condition, excessive amounts of water seep between the boards and into small scratches causing deterioration of finishes. A damp mop should only be damp to the touch. It should be thoroughly wrung and not dripping. Wax-coated finishes should NEVER be cleaned or maintained with water, not even a damp mop. Water can cause a wax finish to be dull or leave water spots.

Laminate

Normal cleaning can be taken care of with vacuuming.

A simple damp mopping is a good idea on an occasional basis. But don't use soap, wax or polish since they will leave a film behind, making the floor look greasy period.

Stains can be wiped away easily with a soft cloth and Laminate Cleaner or de-naturated alcohol. Do not, however, scrub with steel wool or any other coarse material.

As an added precaution, use felt pads under furniture legs, and pads or plastic wheels under chair legs. Always use a doormat in the front entrance as well.

Decorative Vinyl

Do...

Do not...

• Use quality fibre mats at entrances to minimise dirt and grit being brought in from outside. (Warning: Avoid rubber-backed mats as some types can cause permanent floor discolouration.)
• Use protective pads under furniture legs to prevent fine scratches.
• Use load-bearing castors to prevent indentation from heavy items of furniture.
• Mop up spillages as soon as possible to prevent spots becoming stains. Use of the Dim Glow floor protector should ensure better protection from most substances
• Slide or drag appliances or furniture across the floor.
• Allow cigarettes or other hot items to come into contact with the floor, as they can cause permanent damage.
• Apply thick coatings of Dim Glow floor protector. Two thin is sufficient.
• Some cleaning products contain agents that can damage the floor.
• Allow silicone-based products such as furniture polish or glass cleaner to come into contact with the floor. These can make the floor very slippery.
• Allow rubber backed mats or rubber footed furniture to come into contact with the floor. Permanent discolouration may occur.

Carpet

The more care you take of your carpet, the longer it will look good and the longer it will last. Vacuum your carpet regularly and certainly at least once a week. Indeed, heavy traffic areas should be vacuumed daily.

Many new carpets ‘fluff’ initially. Don’t panic – this is perfectly normal! Indeed, with a new carpet you should vacuum it daily.  Remember that you do need to look after your vacuum cleaner as well. Belts and brushes or beater bars need to be in good condition and correctly adjusted for height, most importantly, filters and dust bags need to be emptied regularly.

As to what vacuum cleaner to use, for cut pile carpets, an upright with a beater bar brush is recommended or cylinder vacuums with a turbo head attachment. For loop pile carpets, a suction only cleaner is preferred.

Vacuum cleaners are now available that incorporate high levels of exhaust air filtration, such as HEPA filters. We strongly recommend these
if you have a respiratory condition.

Marmoleum

Marmoleum has a smooth, strong protective finish that makes cleaning and maintenance very simple.  Dry dust wiping is a fast and easy way to keep your floor free from loose dirt

Cushion Floor

Cushion floor can be cleaned using a mild solution of neutral detergent in warm water.  Abrasive cleaning agents, or those which claim to need no rinsing, should not be used

Rugs

For day to day cleaning, a light vacuuming will do an excellent job of removing surface dirt.  A natural enemy of your rug is the moth, and it is advisable to use your vacuum attachments to reach under furniture for protection.  Moths like natural fibres and prefer dark places, and so to help protect against moth, and also colour fading from bright sun light, the rug should be lifted and turned especially if any part is under furniture.  When arranging your furniture it is wise to have some form of  protection under the legs to prevent the carpet fibres from being crushed.  Avoid sharp castors or narrow legs and move furniture round from time to time.  Never lay an oriental rug on a damp floor as the wet can cause rot and always seeks professional help if the rug needs cleaning.  If it is necessary to store a rug for any length of time, take care to pack it with moth repellent.

Matting

If matting is loose it can easily be lifted, taken outside and brushed or beaten to remove dirt.  If it is fixed in situ vacuum cleaning as thoroughly and regularly as possible is best.  Man made fibres can be cleaned by washing methods, natural fibre such as coir should not be cleaned in this way.

Window Decor

Professional dry cleaning is always recommended for curtain materials.  Blinds are easily vacuumed or dusted, washing is possible with most blind materials given normal care and attention.
