Tips and Advice

When employing an interior designer make sure you are on the same wave length as them. Have they done similar work before?  Ask to see their portfolio, ask for references from past customers.

Don't get swayed by their ideas, after all you're the one who will have to live with the new design.

On the other hand, keep an open mind, working with a professional can be a great learning experience...

Colours - in a dark room go for bright not light

Terracotta (orange based) colours = warm

Pink based colours = vibrant and dramatic

Yellow for dull rooms which lack sunlight

Green = calming

Blue = cool and restful

Ideas

I'm going to redecorate my kitchen. New white appliances have already been ordered. Thinking about having light grey paint on the walls. What kind of floor designs would you recommend for best effect?

A wood decor could be effective, wood gives a feeling of warmth and cosiness. Perhaps a light wood shade like maple or birch would match grey walls.

In our living room we have an old worn out carpet. We would like to have an exclusive dark wood floor to match our antique furniture. What would you recommend??

The choice of floor depends on what kind of wood the antique furniture is made from. A floor with a decor of Merbau, teak or oak could be nice. Stick to our idea of a dark wood.

In my living room I have blue and white striped curtains, a white sofa and wooden table and floor. I've been thinking about buying a blue/white checked carpet. Will the carpet fit in?

Yes, of course the only thing to consider is whether the two blues match each other. For example, greenish blue does not go with reddish blue. But to mix stripes with checkers is an interesting combination

My hallway is very dark. I have to have the light on all the time because there are no windows. The walls are olive green. What kind of floor do you recommend? Do you think that I should repaint my walls?

Maybe a light wood decor will lift your hallway, a light maple or a birch floor would be nice. Something else to think about is lighting. Maybe you could use some spotlights on your olive walls, just to make them more light and interesting.

I'm going to repaint my living room and have found a red colour that I like. Because the colour is pretty dark I've decided to paint only one wall. Which one should I paint? The one behind the TV, the one behind the sofa or the one where the windows are?

I think that you should paint the wall that is opposite the window wall. If you do this you will give the wall a maximum amount of light which will make the colours more alive.

I would like to do something new with my kitchen. I think that I would like to have cabinets made of glass. Maybe even with lamps inside. Is this possible to do this myself, to keep down the cost?

Display cabinets give a much lighter impression. Therefore I think it is a good choice, especially if you put lamps in the cupboards. I would not recommend you make them yourself, unless you are a carpenter.

I'm going to buy new blinds for my bedroom and I've been looking at several types: plastic, steel, wooden and so on. Are the most expensive ones always the best one?

What kind of blind you choose depends on the type of style you are creating in your bedroom. Aluminium steel blinds produce a cold, industrial look. Wooden blinds give a cosier impression. They also give the daylight a warmer colour when it passes through.
